It is better to apply at least a month or two before you commence your internship.
Once your CV is accepted you will be called for a short interview at their office. If you don’t live in Mumbai you can request for a telephonic interview.
Office Timings
10 a.m to 5 p.m (If you’re punctual enough and finish your tasks on time, you won’t have to wait extra)
First Day impressions, Infrastructure etc.
Your work starts from the first day itself. You will first be explained about the various programs taking place at Salaam Bombay and will be introduced to the different team heads and other people. And after an hour or so you will be assigned your work.
The infrastructure of Salaam Bombay is pretty amazing for an NGO. It functions less like an NGO and more like a corporate firm.
My overall experience
This being my very first internship I was very nervous in the beginning. But the team at Salaam Bombay is extremely extremely supportive. They will go out of their way, just to help you out.
My major tasks at Salaam Bombay were to prepare literature reviews and design posters for the WHO’s conference. Being very new to research, I was constantly helped by my team head at every point.I got the opportunity to read and research a lot.
I also took the initiative to volunteer for their event and attend some of their meetings, which helped me to network with people apart from my team.
Overall, this was an excellent experience for me. I have a come out a lot better person after this internship.
Biggest Lessons
ASK QUESTIONS. Initially, I was a little reluctant to ask questions, but once I started asking the amount of learning I got from them was incredible. So even if you have a small doubt which you can google and find out, don’t google, go and ask them and they will share lot of extra information and their experiences with you.
TAKE INITIATIVE. One thing that I learnt here was to not be limited to the work you’re assigned to, go an extra mile and take initiatives for their other programs too. I volunteered for their event of Diwali party organised for 1500 orphan children and also took active part in their semi- annual meetings and few other meetings. This gives you two advantages
- You get to learn about many things. I personally learnt lot of things about how organisations functions and what challenges they face, how do they overcome them etc.
- You can network with many people apart from your team head.
BE PUNCTUAL. Punctuality not only in terms of reporting time but also in terms of completing your tasks will leave a very good impression of you. They do not overburden you with work and hence you don’t have to struggle much to complete them. So try to be early on submissions etc., so you can participate in other activities too.

I lived nearby so didn’t need the accommodation. But many PGs are available in the South Bombay area. But it will be a little on the expensive side.
