Chambers of Advocate. John Joseph, High Court of Kerala
Application Process with contact details
Since my uncle was in Ernakulam, through him I came to know about the advocate. I just contacted him through phone and he accepted my request for internship.
Duration of internship and timings
18th May,2016 to 18th June, 2016
First impression, first day formalities, infrastructure
I was ready by 8, in the morning, and the Advocate himself showed up at my uncle’s home to pick me up. After a 45 minute travel in the heavy traffic of Kochi we finally reached his office. It was a spacious office filled with files and Law books. the Advocate gave me the case briefs enlisted for that particular day.
By 10.30 we went to the High Court which is 2 kilometers away from the office and to be honest this was my first day inside a court premise in my whole life time, and by God’s grace the maiden visit turned to be the High Court.
I was filled with excitement when I stepped into the air Conditioned Court hall. Since I was a novice to court procedures, I keenly observed all advocates from their entry to exit from the hall. After my Advocates hearing was done we once again returned to the office. I spent my remaining time reading Kerala Law Times.
After lunch we once again proceeded to the High Court for another hearing and my day ended around 8 at night, when I was dropped at my uncle’s home.
Main tasks
My main task was to go through the case briefs of those cases posted for that particular day. I accompanied my advocate to almost all the courts in Ernakulam District. The Advocate also told my draft a reply notice for one of his clients and I helped him by doing some typing , editing and other allied works. I was also given an opportunity to draft a Divorce petition.
Going through the case-briefs of different issues, helped me to gain rich exposure in the profession.
Work environment and people
The work environment was really great. There were 4 other Advocate’s in the office and they were very amicable with me. Even in the courts the kind nature of advocates made me feel at ease. I also had the opportunity of meeting several student interns and interacting with them literally exposed me to the world around.
Best things
This internship has helped me to understand what it really means to be an Advocate.
Bad things
One thing that makes me feel allergic about Kerala is it’s big rice.
Stipend
No.
Biggest Lessons
The greatest need of the hour for a law student and obviously for an Advocate is to enhance the drafting skills, cause in a competitive environment this skill certainly gives a cutting edge.
Overall Rating
10
Accommodation
I stayed in my uncles home.
Office Timings
9 am to 8 pm
The timing was a bit relaxed.
