The Cell for Studies in Media Law, NLIU Bhopal is organizing the ‘NLIU Media Law Essay Competition, 2015’, to be adjudged by the Alternative Law Forum.
ABOUT CELL FOR STUDIES IN MEDIA LAW
The Cell for Studies in Media Laws was established with the aim to promote research, debate and dialogue on legal and ethical issues related to media and to inculcate a spirit of scholarly discussion among the student body.
ABOUT ALTERNATIVE LAW FORUM
ALF is a space that integrates alternative lawyering with critical research, alternative dispute resolution, pedagogic interventions and more generally maintaining sustained legal interventions in various social issues.
TOPICS FOR THE COMPETITION
1. Should there be nothing offensive about the right to offend?
2. Whoever controls the media controls the mind. When paid news masquerades as real news, what is the price of the truth in the media?
3. The importance of net neutrality and a free and open internet.
4. The press is there to “inform, educate and entertain”. While doing so it is meant to be “irreverent, unruly and opinionated”, (Lord Justice Leveson, An Inquiry into the Culture, Practices and Ethics of the Press, Executive Summary, November 2012, at p. 6). Does the Indian media need to be regulated? Who will regulate the media?
5. “…there ought to exist the fullest liberty of professing and discussing, as a matter of ethical conviction, any
doctrine, however immoral it may be considered.”- John Stuart Mill.
Keeping in view the dynamic understanding of ‘obscenity’, is the law protecting the freedom of speech and expression of the content creators?
