Application Process
I had to send an e-mail to sm@thehindu.co.in along with my CV, they got in touch with me over phone in a week’s time asking me which bureau of the newspaper I wanted to intern in. I expressed my preference and a confirmation e-mail was sent almost immediately.
Duration of internship and timings
19th October, 2011 to 20th November, 2011.
First impression, first day formalities, infrastructure
There are absolutely no first day formalities. I was initially intimidated to be sitting in the office of a newspaper that was a legend in my part of the country. There was a desk allotted to interns, a little while later my co-intern turned up and I felt at ease.
Main tasks
Interning in the Hindu is like being inside a magic theater , you will not be given any work until you ask for it. I was lucky to have a co-intern who was as interested as I am in becoming a journalists. Together we researched on two stories out of which one was published while we were interning.
Work environment and people
The work environment is very casual, someone or the other were constantly cracking jokes either on the news or on politics. People were very friendly and helpful, in fact they helped us with the research.
Best things
You get to work with great journalists.
Your work actually gets published in the Hindu.
Stress free environment.
Bad things
You have to ask for work , else you will end up being idle all day.
Stipend
None
Biggest Lessons
Ask for what you want and you will get it.
Any Other Thing
Intern here if you want to be a journalist.
