Application Process
Application process is very simple. You can directly call the system manager at PSHRC to confirm availability for internship following which you need to send your CV and College Recommendation letter to them. Most Probably they select interns on first come first serve basis.
Duration of internship and timings
4 weeks. December’12-January’13
Timings: In morning, you have to reach the commission by 10 am, whereas leaving the office depends upon the number of cases you are being assigned.
First impression, first day formalities, infrastructure
They make the interns in their conference hall. On first day, they gave printed copied of bare act of The Human Rights Act,1993 and were asked to read it thoroughly.
Main tasks
Internship was divided into three stages. In first stage, we were asked to read the case and ascertain whether the commission has the jurisdiction to take the cognizance or not.
In the second stage, we were asked to prepare the gists of cases and also to fill up the basic information forms.
The last stage comprised of a project work on any human rights issue which required field work as well.
Work environment and people
Work environment was very informal. Rohit sir was very nice to everyone and always behaved casually with the interns. They was no strict code of conduct to be followed.
Sometimes interns were allowed to leave early also by the permission of Rohit Sir. They were around 20 interns from different law schools.
Best things
I was very scared as I had passed my first semester only and didn’t know much about any law.
The simplicity of the work and easy jobs assigned which still were highly knowledgeful for us. So such internships can be best experience for any first year law student instead of going to Courts or any Law firm.
Bad things
We couldn’t see the court proceedings of any case. Also, working on the same type of work for 10-15 days became quite monotonous.
Stipend
No Stipend.
Biggest Lessons
The Biggest Lessons were that you get to know how actually the human rights are being violated. Hearing such instances on television, which seems like nothing to us are quite different in reality. How the law and order keepers become one to infringe the people’s rights and then those people find their ultimate resort in such statutory bodies which help them protect their rights.
