Experience: I interned at FML during the Durga puja – Diwali vacations along with two other batch-mates. FML takes around 10 interns at a time. There is a place for interns in the basement adjacent to the library which is so secluded that we called it a dungeon.

Every intern has a folder on the computer network and the associates/partners post queries and research work which is allocated to interns by the librarian.

The clerical work: The first couple of days we were given a lot of clerical work from renaming files according to their contents and making indexes to proof-reading entire red herring prospectuses. This clerical work was related to the issue of IPOs and FPOs, SEBI takeover code and Unified Access Service Licence Agreement, etc.

Areas of law: During the course of internship, I did get a chance to research on corporate law, industrial law, contract law, taxation law and securities law among others.

I also worked on relevant case laws on takeover of companies, subsidiaries and buy back of shares, specific relief, income tax and various other fields relating to Industrial Establishments, Transfer of Property and Contract Act. Also, every intern has to compulsorily make a presentation.

I along with a couple of interns submitted a presentation on “Direct Tax Code and the Vodafone Case: Recent developments threatening Private Equity Structure in India”.

Training: We also had a one-hour induction programme taken by Prof. N. L. Mitra (Partner, FML and Ex-VC of NLSIU, Bangalore and NLU, Jodhpur) through video conferencing from Bangalore in which he told us about corporate law as a career option and then went on the teach us about things which were very important but never taught in a law school like templates, lawyers’ diary, etc.

Good things- FML has a cafeteria and provides free lunch. And the snacks at tea time were really good (I still miss bread pizza). Apart from that you can intern at FML if you need a chilled out internship as the timings are not much and Saturdays are off. I would advice FML to people who want to do their first corporate internship.

Bad things- Clerical work.
