Hope International NGO, Kolkata
Application Process
I went in person to their office and spoke to the person in charge. Later, I had to send a formal application to paulami@hope-foundation.in
Duration of internship and timings
October-November,2013.3 weeks Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm.
First impression, first day formalities, infrastructure
I was introduced to my team of community producers I was to work with. There were about 8-9 of them from different villages in Kolkata.
The age group was very varied ranging from 17 years to 50 years. It was very moving to see how even after facing difficulties and opposition from their families, they would come to work everyday, so eager to learn.
Main tasks
My task was to educate community producers about socio legal legislations. Community producers are basically volunteers from different villages.
They are associated with this NGO so that they can themselves learn and spread awareness in their own villages by broadcasting and showing movies about a relevant topic from time to time.
I was also required to go on various field trips, where we showcased a movie as well as had interactive sessions with the people of that village.
Work environment and people
Extremely sweet and helpful. They would go out of their way to bring food for me and make me feel comfortable. Work environment may not always have been so conducive, but none the less, it was worth it.
Best things
Got to learn a lot myself and meet very different people and interact with them who I would not ordinarily interact with.
Bad things
Nothing I can really complain about. Its the real rural life and i had to experience it as it is.

Biggest Lessons
Giving up is never an option. I met acid attack survivors, women who were beaten up by both their husbands and their in laws but still would come to work with a smiling face. I was really inspired by them and what I learnt in those 3 weeks will stay with me for life.
