Application Process
I contacted them through this land connection: 033 2243 5251. On fixing an appointment I approached their Kolkata office at the following address where they placed some questions on law subjects which I had already studied in college. The office address is 2, Nicco House, 6th Floor, Hare Street, Kolkata 700001.
Duration of internship and timings
I worked from 2nd June, 2014 to 21st June, 2014.
First impression, first day formalities, infrastructure
The first day I was asked to introduce myself and interact with the other interns. I was shown how to access the e-journals and Westlaw and Manupatra sites. The work environment is very formal and the senior Associates mostly kept to themselves. However there were Advocates who showed a keen interest in my work and helped create a comfortable first day initiation.
Main tasks
I was asked to look up cases on 197 CrPC, and asked to submit write ups on debatable issues such as could Section 451 CrPC be superseded by Section 9 of the Arbitration and Conciliation Act or Special laws prevail over general laws.
Dishonor of cheques and breach of contracts in construction cases were another segment of work that was assigned to me. I did extensive research on mattes related to Section 69 of the Partnership Act, 1930 as well as Section 73 of the Contract Act,1972.
Work environment and people
The interns are allotted work the day before and are expected to submit the research work or analysis early, the next day. The Associate to whom I was assigned, helped to explain the cases very elaborately for us to understand after which we were given work on that case. It was all very strict and formal. We were asked to wear uniforms at all times. My fellow interns were mostly from first and second years of law school.
Best things
The Senior Associates were a huge source of knowledge and learning. They imparted a very lasting impression on the interns. We were motivated into study more subjects even though they were relatively new to us. The interns were groomed into understanding the various paraphernalia of legal court procedures which were very new to me.
Bad things
There was very less interactions amongst the interns and Associates except while assigning tasks. Individual attention was not possible throughout. Long sessions left very less time to work assignments at home.
Stipend
No stipend is offered at AK Singh and Associates.
Biggest Lessons
This law firm allowed me my first research exposure. I learnt that it is not possible to learn all the laws in college but gradually on ones own. I learned how to apply the laws learnt to cases on which the firm worked. I learnt how to find relevant case laws and summarise a brief from various raw sources such as emails and letters exchanged between the parties.
Any Other Thing
Use of electronics and casual internet surfing were mostly a no-no.
Overall Rating
4
Accommodation
Kolkata is my hometown, hence I did not require any separate accommodation for the duration of the internship.
Office Timings
Office timings were from 10 am in the morning to 6 pm in the evening. A one and a half hour gap is allowed for lunch. Interns are not allowed to leave the office premises early.
