Overall Experience
It was one of the best internships I’ve ever done. If you come across as someone who is willing to get the work done, they will assign you a lot of good work. Most of the other interns tell me that they get work like ‘proofreading, photocopying” etc at their firms but HRLN gives you good work and it keeps you on your toes. It also depends on who your mentor is.
First day formalities
I was asked to meet the Director and fill a form. She told us about the do’s and don’ts of the organization. I was lucky enough to get work on day one.
Main tasks
The organization has both legal and non-legal work and you’re asked to do both. The legal work that I was assigned was mostly research, drafting applications, affidavits, rejoinders etc. The legal work also includes dealing with the clients on a personal level. I attended various court proceedings and learnt the groundwork that no one really teaches you. I also assisted in drafting rejoinders etc and accompanied my mentor to various meetings with a top Supreme Court lawyer.
Non- legal work consists of drafting applications, meeting clients etc. If you get a chance they take you for fact-finding and fieldwork. A couple of my co-interns were lucky as they got to visit Rohingya camps.
Best thing
Friday meetings: Every Friday, all the members of the office gather in the conference room and talk about who is working on what and they share their experiences. Most Fridays we had a speaker (mostly from outside India) to speak.
Work Environment
Everyone is very helpful, hard working. Its great to see so many people working for the betterment of our country. The cases they deal with are very interesting. The office has a very good vibe. The outside area of the office is a bit noisy at times, but then again its DELHI!!!
Lesson learnt: Take every chance. Drop every fear !!
