Duration of internship and timings
My Internship was from 12th May to 6th June, (4 weeks).
The duration is quite flexible and you may pick your own dates. It becomes extremely crowded in June so its advisable to apply in April-May or August-September. Mostly interns at DSK Legal come from Delhi itself such as NLU, DU-CLC and Amity, but there are others from GNLU, RMLNLU and NLIU
First impression, first day formalities, infrastructure
The office is quite quaint, consists of 4 floors, reception and intern quarters/library on the ground floor, corporate and competition teams on the 1st floor, Litigation team on the 2nd floor and IT support and canteen on the 3rd.
The firm makes you sign a Non-Disclosure Agreement (NDA) to protect the privacy of Information.
The address is slightly misleading. The office is NOT opposite Hyatt RK Puram, and is in fact is three bus stops later on 10, Aradhana Enclave. You may take a Metro to AIIMS on the Yellow Line and Take a Bus or Auto to RK Puram Sector 12.
You will be sitting idle for a few hours on the first day soaking in the ambience. you have to wait for associates to call the front desk and ask for an intern following which Prerna ma’am on the front desk will come looking for volunteers.
The best thing to do is to take initiative, volunteer and ask for work. I was previously acquainted with an associate through a previous work assignment so it was slightly easier.
Always remember to carry something for lunch as there are no outlets nearby for food and you may have to travel 2-3 kilometres on either side for a bite.
Main tasks
There is no dearth of work in the office but the individual has to take initiative to get work. Work includes Drafting documents including Petitions, Affidavits and Letters Patent Appeals, Research on Companies Act, Taxation, Delhi, Haryana Land Laws and Trademarks Act.
The work is extremely fulfilling and and a good effort is appreciated by the concerned taskmaster
You may even be asked to deal with a client first hand and escort that person through the required legal minefields, procedures and formalities and advise accordingly.
Sometimes you may also be tasked with espionage to government offices for research purposes.
Work environment and people
It is an extremely conducive working environment.
No one is in a hurry ever but somehow they manage to get the work done accurately on time. If you have good co-interns you may seek their help for completion of a task.
No one is competing with each other to be in the spotlight but rather are working collectively for the firm’s benefit.
However the key to getting good work is to take up as much work, no matter how pedantic as possible and finish it on time in the best possible manner. You need to make yourself indispensable to the taskmasters.
Stipend
No stipend is paid to the interns, however all pre-approved expenses such as travel, food and others are reimbursed
Biggest Lessons
1) A very cliched phrase, but hard work is the key getting a pat on the back
2) It is important to make yourself known in the office
3) Always show eagerness to work
4) No work is small
5) Its important to look good and talk smartly, especially while dealing with clients.
