The Centre for Civil Society invites you to the eBaithak on Fair Trade? Its Prospects as a Poverty Solution with Dr. Victor V. Claar which is being organised on the 25th of May 2020.
eBaithaks are essentially free-flowing discussions on a specific topic. eBaithaks follow an open group discussion format where the speaker is the moderator and principal guide for all the participants. It takes place on a virtual platform (currently Zoom), and are interactive, interpersonal and liberal spaces of discussion and deliberation.
About the program
The fair trade movement was designed to help producers in developing countries to sell their goods to companies in developed countries. An entire system of fair trade labelling organisations, markets and networks has cropped up. The intention was to allow producers in developing countries to get a better price that helps them come out of poverty and to escape exploitation. In times of COVID19, there have been greater calls for using the fair trade system to ensure benefits accrue to the producers in the developing world.
In this eBaithak with Victor Claar, Professor of Economics at Florida Gulf Coast University, we will explore the economic and moral questions about both the logic and economic reasoning underlying the fair trade movement. We will explore whether fair trade, for all its good intentions, has actually helped the poor, especially in the developing world.

About the Speaker
Victor V. Claar, Ph.D., is associate professor of economics in the Lutgert College of Business at Florida Gulf Coast University in Fort Myers, where he holds the BB&T Distinguished Professorship in Free Enterprise. He is also a member of the Mont Pelerin Society and the Philadelphia Society.
He is a coauthor of Economics in Christian Perspective: Theory, Policy, and Life Choices, author of the Acton Institute’s Fair Trade? Its Prospects as a Poverty Solution, and coauthor of The Keynesian Revolution and Our Empty Economy: We’re All Dead.
