First Day

I had to report to the registrar of the commission. He seemed pretty welcoming.

He explained to me the basic working of the commission in brief as I was early that day.

I also learnt that I was the first intern at the commission.

There weren’t too many formalities. I had to hand in an application for internship the previous day. It got approved in a day and I could join the next day itself.

Infrastructure was never much of a concern.

We had access to a clean washroom and a decent canteen in the premises of the commission, which was more than enough.

Main tasks

The main task was only and only observing the court proceedings.

As it is a government institution, they wouldn’t risk allotting any work to interns.

They have staff deputed for all kinds of work.

Environment

The people at work right from the clerical staff to the president of the commission were very supportive and warm.

They always made sure I was comfortable in the place.

Occasionally, I would get to interact with the judge.

Best things

Interacting with the judge was the best part of the internship.

Whenever the proceedings ended soon, he would call me into his chamber and talk to me.

He realised I began to find the proceedings boring, but never spoke to me in a reprimanding tone about it.

He would try discussing the cases dealt with that day, to see if I was able to follow the proceedings.

Bad things

Being a tribunal, all the cases would be of similar nature.

Although initially they seemed interesting, monotony took over soon.

Fighting sleep would sometimes be the task of the day.

There isn’t much work to be done.

Two weeks is the maximum amount of time one could probably work there.

You will just learn the method of functioning of the institution and have access to some of the judgments.

Biggest Lessons

I learnt that tribunals are not probably the right places to intern.

Being government institutions and having staff for any kind of work, they wouldn’t risk delegating any work to you, in spite of repeatedly asking for it.
