NUSRL, Ranchi has released its placement stats for the batch of 2017.
While the placements have gotten qualitatively better (marginally) vis-a-vis 2016, the overall recruitment scenario leaves much to be desired.
Here are the numbers:
Total students in the batch: 94 students
Total students opting for placements: 40
Accepted job offers: 25
Editor’s comment: It’s surprising that NUSRL Ranchi’s press release says that only 40 out of 94 students opted for placements! It’s usual and expected from colleges to give various excuses for this: that the students are opting for LLMs, judiciary exams and litigation.
If real, this would be a great sign! However, this is usually done to inflate placement numbers. This is true for most colleges in India, including colleges outside the law domain.
Below is the break-up of the job offers received:
Law firms
- Khaitan & Co.: 2
- Luthra & Luthra Law Offices: 1(Off Campus)
- Hari Global Advisors: 2
- Athena Law: 2
- Asav Law Partners: 1
- Hammurabi & Solomon (Fellowship Programme*): 2
Editor’s comment: Only 3 placements in the top law firms (Khaitan and Luthra) indicate the the big law firms aren’t really keen to hire from the lower ranked NLUs. At the same, this means that intelligent, enterprising students even from these NLUs do have a shot (albeit a long shot) at the big law firms.
* Hammurabi fellowship is an internship program for six months after which candidate will be considered for job.
Companies
- Wipro Ltd.: 2
- L & T Finance Ltd.: 3
- Metropolitan Stock Exchange India Ltd.: 1
- Vedika Credit Capital Ltd.: 2
- All India Reporter: 5
- Eastern Book Company: 4
Editor’s comment: 9 jobs come from the stables of All India Reporter and Eastern Book Company (both reputed legal publishers). Some jobs at these firms can mean good training in legal research and writing. A lot of jobs also mean basic proof-reading and head-note writing. The salary at these companies ranges from Rs. Rs. 15,000-30,000/month. Wipro and L & T are quality job offers.
Fellowships
- LAMP: 1
- Teach For India: 1
Editor’s comments: Both these fellowships are highly reputed and fiercely contested.
Final note: NUSRL Ranchi’s 2016 placement stats are here. That year Quislex, an LPO company hired as many as 17 students.
This year with accepted offers from Khaitan, Luthra, Wipro and L & T and some good fellowships, the placements seem to have gotten slightly better.
However, for a batch of 94 students, the ‘quality’ job offers are too few.

As pointed out by Prof Shamnad Basheer, legal websites have not reported on the rape conviction of Jindal students for gangrape on campus. Shameful that small incidents at other law schools get highlighted but a rich law school can buy the media’s silence.
