The Aadhar Act was recently notified following its passage as a money bill.
There are two cases challenging the Aadhar Act pending before the Supreme Court. The passage of the Aadhar Act as a money bill raises many constitutional and procedural questions on the validity of such a move. The Aadhar system will also possibly negatively impact the right to privacy in India.
The use of biometrics-as in the Aadhar- has been contentious across the world. This is due to potential threats to the security of databases, potential violation of privacy and imposition of heavy costs on the economy.
The efficacy of Aadhar in improving public distribution systems has also been called into question. Leading experts will comment on the various issues in the ongoing Aadhar debate.
