Position
Project 39A is looking to engage interns at its campus in Dwarka, New Delhi for its litigation work. This is a part-time internship programme with the interns being expected to work for at least four hours per working day. The internship is for a period of three months starting from March 2019.
About Project 39A
Project 39A draws inspiration from Article 39-A in the Indian Constitution on equal justice and signals the broadening of our work on the criminal justice system in India. We undertake litigation, research and outreach relating to forensics, torture, legal aid, forensic psychiatry and death penalty (for more information on Project 39A, visit www.project39a.com).
About the litigation initiative
The Project provides pro bono legal assistance to several prisoners sentenced to death across the country. The Project also represents prisoners who are challenging the rejection of their mercy petitions by the Governor or the President. Additionally, the Project is involved in strategic litigation aimed at challenging procedural and substantive aspects of the criminal justice system for the realization of constitutional rights of prisoners sentenced to death. Currently, the Project has a team of six litigators and two mitigation investigators.
Responsibilities
The interns work closely with the litigation associates and will be involved in preparation of legal strategy and arguments for cases handled by the Project, and carry out related research. They will also assist in drafting criminal appeals, review petitions, writ petitions, applications, rejoinders and other legal documents.
Eligibility
The internship is open to students in India enrolled in a recognized undergraduate or postgraduate programme in law. Those enrolled in other programmes may apply but preference will be given to those enrolled in programmes listed above.
Remuneration
Interns will be paid a stipend of Rs 3,000 (Rupees Three Thousand Only) for every four week period of internship undergone.

Interested students may send their resumé and a statement of purpose, explaining their interest in working on issues of death penalty and the contribution that they see themselves making to the work. The statement of purpose must not exceed 500 words. Please send your resumé and statement of purpose to p39a@nludelhi.ac.in.

Applications must reach us no later than midnight of 3rd February 2019 else it won’t be considered.
