Application Process

If they are not satisfied with you CV, you will get a mail of their regretting to provide you internship. If your CV is found to be impressive, they will mail and call you to fix a date for telephonic interview. If you’re selected in such interview, they will ask you the period for which you want to do internship and freeze dates for the same.

First impression, first day formalities, infrastructure

The venue was very impressive. There were so many persons. It was a corporate atmosphere in the true sense.

On the first day, I was accommodated a computer, and a mail ID through which I can send whatever research I have done on a particular topic to the concerned authority. There is a reception from where you can come to know where you have to go, who you have to approach and where you have to sit. I first met Ms. Ruchika Agarwal who had recruited me. She explained me everything I needed to know about the firm and about the way of working, about what to do and what not to do.

The infrastructure was great and very impressive. Every intern had a separate computer to work on with internet facility and access to Manupatra database. There were basic facilities of printer and photocopying. There was a well equipped with a great variety of books on subjects relating mostly to mercantile law. There’s a pantry where you can have coffee or eat something.

Main tasks

My work as an intern was mostly research based. But that was because I was first year only at that time. For persons senior to me, there was also work of drafting, besides research.

Because it was a corporate law firm, I got to research on subjects like Industrial Disputes Act, the Trade Disputes Act, the Rajasthan Stamp Act, Canadian Law on Intellectual Property, the Negotiable Instruments Act, and the Constitution of India etc.

My task was mainly to search for case laws as authorities on a very specific topic for e.g. “whether the definition of “workman” given in the Industrial Disputes Act can be applied in interpretation of the term workman in the Trade Disputes Act, wherever it is mentioned in that Act?”

Once my task of research was complete, I was supposed to mail whatever I had researched to the person who had given me the task. Sometimes, I was also called to have a discussion with such person on the issue.

I was also given the task of reading a loan agreement so as to edit the repetitions contained therein. Because of this, I came to know about the various provisions which are to be incorporated in a loan agreement.

Work environment and people

Work environment is very friendly and the people there are very helping but at the same time they are also very strict. I got to learn a lot from my interactions with the professionals in the firm. There is an atmosphere of constant learning. Every day, there’s a morning lecture on any new subject relating to law by one of the members of the firm or by any of the interns, often with a Power Point Presentation on it.

Best things

There is a lot of work. They make sure that you are not free any time of the day. There is real exposure to practical problems because what we are made to research about are actual queries of corporate clients. You learn to do work within deadlines. The fear of working at an actual office vanishes. It develops a lot of confidence, especially because as an intern, you have to give a power point presentation on a particular subject in front of all the professionals who ask you questions. Wow! That is scary too.

Biggest Lessons

You have to be very careful with handling multiple tasks. You have to keep your seniors informed about work progress because they have their deadlines.

Secondly, practical experience is very different from college studies. Practical experience is based a lot on reasoning skills. Your speed of finding out cases from different databases is very important for bringing efficiency. In legal research, you must always gather information from authoritative sources like case laws and not from vague sources like blogs available online, because that will not be relied upon by the court.

Accommodation

I have my residence in Jaipur, but for outsiders accommodation is easily available at reasonable rates in Jaipur.

Office Timings

The office timings are 9:30 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.

In between, you are allowed a lunch break and a tea break.

These timings are strict.
