The Indian Journal of Law and Technology (IJLT) and the Software Freedom Law Centre (SFLC) are proud to announce the 1st IJLT-SFLC Law & Technology Essay Competition 2013.
Open to undergraduate law students across India, this essay competition seeks to encourage creative thinking and promote research and writing about crucial legal issues in the field of information technology and the internet.
The IJLT
The Indian Journal of Law and Technology (IJLT), is a student-run law journal published by the National Law School of India University, Bangalore.
Apart from being India’s only law journal devoted exclusively to the interface between law and technology and featuring articles from distinguished authors such as Hon. Justice Mr. Kirby, Raymond T. Nimmer, Donald S. Chisum, Lawrence Liang among others; the journal also organises several events such as a lecture series in association with the Centre for Internet and Society (CIS), a broadband policy course with LIRNEAsia and research assistance to academics for projects that they are engaged in.
The SFLC
“sflc.in is a donor supported legal services organisation that brings together lawyers, policy analysts, technologists, and students to protect freedom in the digital world. The major focus of the organisation is to educate various stakeholders on the legal aspects of Technology and the Internet.
Themes for Submissions
- Intellectual Property : Software Patent Litigation – A Waste of Time and Money?
- Internet Governance : Network Neutrality – Can Competition Law in India Ensure a Level Playing Field?
- Openness and Accessibility : Governmental Support for Open Source and Open Access – Need for Legal Framework to Ensure Access to Knowledge.
- Privacy : ‘If You’re Not Paying For It, You’re the Product Being Sold’ – Privacy Issues on the Internet.
Judging
The winning law essays shall be determined through a blind review by a panel of eminent academicians in the field of law and technology.
There will be two judges from each of the aforementioned areas.
Prizes
- Ist Prize – Rs. 10,000
- IInd Prize – Rs. 7,500
- IIIrd Prize – Rs. 5,000
- Best First Year Student Essay – Rs. 2,500
The winning law essay shall also be considered for publication in the next issue of IJLT, in accordance with the Editorial Policy.
Deadline
Essays must be e-mailed to editorialboard+essay@ijlt.in; tarunkrishnakumar1@gmail.com by January 30, 2013 at 11.59 pm (IST) in a .doc/.docx/.odf/.pdf format. Detailed submission guidelines are attached.

Given the volume of submissions we have received, it will not be possible to send individual acknowledgement mails.
Since the deadline has been extended, you can send in a revised submission by the new deadline if you prefer. Only one entry per author is allowed. Co-authorship is not allowed.

There is no process of registration. As soon as you send in your essay to editorialboard@ijlt.in you are automatically registered for the competition.
Send us a mail to the above ID after the competition deadline and let us know if you want a n acknowledgement of participation.

There is no registration fee. We do not send participation certificates, we will however acknowledge your participation by email if required by you.
