Duration of internship and timings

June – August 2014 (about 6 weeks), Morning 9 A.M. to 1 P.M., then post lunch at about 4 P.M., till about 7:30 P.M. Timings could vary as per the work load during the week. However, flexibility allowed wherever some genuine reason is involved.

First impression, first day formalities, infrastructure

The office is easily accessible and is located in a residential area where there is no problem of parking vehicles etc. By virtue of it’s proximity to the market area, it can be said to be perfectly located.

First impression was amazing, the office has a very positive vibe. There were hardly any formalities, everything was taken care of.

I was allocated my desk next to a junior advocate which helped me interact and get comfortable with the premises and the work on the very first day.

Infrastructure is newly built and impeccable – individual desks, enough lighting, research area (desktops with internet connection, printers, et al) conference room, library etc., all these facilities are available.

There is a small kitchenette which houses all the basic facilities of tea, coffee etc.

Main tasks

The main task as an intern primarily revolved around reading case laws and researching. Analysing the case and the relevant law related to it your own perspective was one of the regular tasks to be performed.

There was a lot of reading involved and the main job was to study case laws thoroughly and come up with certain rebuttal arguments or replies wherever required, on the basis of your understanding of the law.

One also had to find certain related judgments which could augment and improve the arguments in a particular case.

Work environment and people

The work environment was very pleasant as the office was a lively and pleasant place to be at. There was sufficient understanding among the entire staff and things were done timely and as per the plan.

The next day schedules and cases were discussed well in advance on the previous day and work was allocated accordingly. Court visits were efficiently managed, depending upon the urgency of the matters at hand.

The client visits in the evenings kept the momentum going.

Co-workers ensured to maintain a very amicable environment. There was a lot of learning which I would attribute to them and there was no feeling of superiority or inferiority between the lawyers and the interns.

Everyone worked cohesively, like a team.

Best things

The infrastructure and the attitude of the co – workers really made it a pleasant experience.

The welcoming nature of the lawyer and his openness to your questions and queries made the experience worth it.

Bad things

Being left behind during other lawyers’ court visits could make it difficult to pass time.

Biggest Lessons

It is very essential to be able to identify the right out of the wrong; thus focusing on the grey areas of law. People have their hopes hanging upon you, so it is very essential to be true to this noble profession.

One must always be prepared to answer the ‘how’ and the ‘why’ of a question.

Practical knowledge of the intricacies involved in litigation is crucial to be able to survive in this profession.
