Application Process
I wrote a mail to the HR, asking about how to apply for the internship and she gave me a date and all the other people that had applied to write a test at the EBC Office in Lucknow.
Based on the test, the top 4 applicants get to intern, since they can accommodate only 4 interns at a time.
The test is on basic English, proof-reading skills, editing skills, logical skills, maths.
There are both objective and subjective questions.
If you want to do more than an internship, and if you live in Lucknow, then you may also apply for a long-term, paid legal research-ship.
Duration of internship and timings
1 month. Sharp 9.30 am to 6.30 pm Monday to Friday.
9.30 am to 5.00 pm on Saturdays.
First impression, first day formalities, infrastructure
The office building is nice and neat, consisting of several floors, lockers, and a dining hall.
On the first day, you are required to sign a paper that states the terms and conditions to be followed at the workplace.
Then, you will be directed to the people under whom you will be working and on the first day they’ll teach you a lot of things, example, how to use SCC online, how to make case briefs et cetera.
The first impression was hence very kind and welcoming.
Main tasks
Since I was the senior-most amongst the 4 interns, I got the opportunity to work in the book – editing section, apart from the common work we all got.
The work involved mainly reading national and international cases and writing their briefs which are published in ‘The Practical Lawyer,’ a legal magazine published by EBC.
Work environment and people
The work environment is great. It’s a fully air-conditioned office and you get to have your own space, i.e., your own computer, desk, bulletin board and chair.
The people are very friendly, they make you feel very comfortable and everyone is very kind.
Best things
I had the greatest opportunity to work on revising and updating a book on judicial precedents, published by EBC wherein I got to work extensively on article 142 and the status of ‘death penalty’ in India.
Great, quiet and relaxed work environment.
There’s a mess food provider who makes really nice home-like lunch for a very reasonable price.
And you get to eat cake on birthdays!
The bosses are really inspiring!
Bad things
Timings. Using your brain and reading all day can get very tiring.
Lunch time is only half-an-hour.
Stipend
None. But you get to take home books of your choice. I picked a book on Comparative Constitutional Law.
Biggest Lessons
If you don’t like reading, then this place will make you fall in love with reading. This is also facilitated by the fact that you cannot access most search engines, social networking sites and Youtube.
I got to read some great texts by Aristotle, John Rawls etc. which made me fall in love with philosophies and legal jurisprudence.
I was made to think from different perspectives and take inter-disciplinary approaches which is something that many students lack today.
Any Other Thing
If you love books and love reading, then this internship is a delight!
