Name, College and Year
Karan Shelke, Maharashtra National Law University (Mumbai), 4th-year BA LLB (Hons.).
Organisation and address
RegStreet Law Advisors, 507, Embassy Center, Nariman Point, Mumbai – 400021, India.
Duration of internship
February 2019 – April 2019, i.e. 3 Months
How you applied?
The Firm had allotted certain slots for our University. However one can apply at the Firm as several of my co-interns had applied from the website procedure.
The minimum period of internship shall be 4 weeks. However, they prefer long term interns.
First day formalities, infrastructure, first impression
RegStreet is a boutique law Firm specializing in the regulatory area. They have a small and dedicated team. One the first day itself, we were introduced to three associates and also the Managing partner of the Firm Mr. Sumit Agrawal.
For the first day impression, one needs to be updated with the financial news.
They have good and helpful associates, peaceful ambience and fine infrastructure. Their office is spacious with a good collection of books. They also have a conference room with tv and interns while in their free time are expected to either watch CNBC, Amicus Curiae on ET Now, etc or read a newspaper.
Soon after settling down on my first day I was given work to do. The main purpose for the Firm to have an internship program is to make students know about the regulatory aspect of the securities market.
Hence it’s great exposure for any law student who wants to practice in securities law.
Main tasks
Major work was on SEBI Act, Regulations thereunder and Companies Act. Interns were also told to write articles on regulatory aspects as the Firm regularly publishes articles on its website. I was also given work on drafting exemption applications under SEBI Regulations.
We were told to make summary lists of daily orders passed by SEBI and SAT. We were later informed by associates or sometimes by the Managing Partner about the client which we represented.
After reading the order and getting relevant inputs from the associates, we were told to research the relevant law. The associates allowed interns to visit SEBI and SAT along with them. Interns were also told to make case/order summaries, draft appeals, applications and make legal opinions.
Good things
- Interns are made to sit in conference calls with clients hence it proves to be a great learning experience for the aspiring lawyers in terms of communicating with the clients.
- Interns are expected to stay updated on current affairs.
- The Managing partner is visiting faculty at GLC and for the lecture series, the interns are allowed to accompany him. This provides a great opportunity for the interns to learn the basic facets of Securities law.
- The office environment is friendly and everyone in the office is approachable, including the Managing Partner.
Bad things
Nothing as such but interns on a busy day are expected to stay back.
Stipend
The stipend may range from Rs. 3,000 – Rs. 15,000 depending on the performance
Commuting to office
Shared cabs are available from CST and Churchgate.
Anything else, what you did to chill out, lessons learnt etc.
The Firm is really appreciative while taking interns. The people in the Firm are really helpful and caring. Everyone in the Firm is approachable including the Managing Partner.
The team goes out quite often for dinners and outings on weekends so it’s a great experience for someone who wants to explore Mumbai.
