First impression, first day formalities, infrastructure

The first day involved an introduction session. We gave our personal introductions and then there was a presentation on the history of NALSA and its administrative structure, functions and working.

We were acquainted with the schemes of NALSA and also the cases fought by NALSA. We were then given petitions to read and were directed on how to respond to the petitions.

Main tasks

We researched on the cases and schemes of NALSA and also went on field visits to the juvenile justice board, child care centres, juvenile prisons, mediation centres, parliament, Rohini jail among others.

We were enlightened with the working and functions of each of these organisations and their divisions and how they played a role in providing legal aid to the underprivileged.

Work environment and people

The work environment was pretty relaxed. We were given a schedule before hand and were expected to reach at the particular locations on the allotted dates. My team was quite inquisitive and friendly and we had a great time working together.

We had long discussions with the officials of each of the organisations we visited and we got to learn a lot from most of them. It was totally worth the time and effort. However, at certain organisations, we were given absolutely no work and we just whiled away our time.

Best things

The mediation session and the trip to Rohini jail. A few of the interactions with officials were quite fruitful. We learnt various aspects of the outside legal world through this internship.

Bad things

There was no work given at a few organizations and we had to travel great distances for nothing. We had to make our own arrangements for travel.

Biggest Lessons

It gives a peek into the legal world and helps us understand it better. We got to attend mediation sessions, watch court proceedings, understand the functioning of a police station among others.

Accommodation

Stayed at home.

Office Timings

10 am to 5 pm on office days. 10 am to 1 pm on field visit days. The timings were pretty relaxed and they were not very strict with attendance.
