HRLN, Mumbai Internship

I interned at ICHRL (Indian Centre for Human Rights and Law), Mumbai, which is a branch of HRLN, an NGO, in winter, 2008 for six weeks.

An eye-opener

I worked in the unit called WJI or Women’s Justice Initiative.

The experience was not completely academic, as it was also an eye-opener, as it taught me how many women were being harassed and abused, mainly in the lower and lower-middle class families, for different reasons such as dowry, birth of a male child, etc.

I also learnt that the biggest enemies of most of these women were illiteracy and financial dependence.

Locational Problems

At that time, their offices were located at Masjid, which is one stop before CST, in the Central and Harbour Railway Lines. The place is not a very safe one, therefore, I would like 2 advice girls, that if they plan on interning there, they should check whether the offices have been shifted or not.

Other than that one concern, the internship was a learning experience, and I would encourage others to intern with the NGO.

Apply to the legal unit

Also, when you apply, do make sure that you are being accepted by the unit which deals in law, since there is very little chance of exposure in the legal filed, if you are assigned to a unit which does more work in the field of social activism, unrelated to law.
