A PIL by Kshitij Sharma and Abhishek Rao (two 1st year students of NLSIU Bangalore) for removal of the age limit for CLAT aspirants has borne results.
The division bench of Hon’ble Rajasthan High Court comprising of Acting Chief Justice Sunil Ambwani and Justice Prakash Gupta has passed an interim order removing the maximum age limit i.e. 20 years for General and 22 years for SC/ST candidates for appearing in the Common Law Admission Test conducted for admission into 16 National Law Universities across India.
It has also directed the CLAT body that the HC’s interim order be placed on the CLAT website.
The Chief Justice observed that one cannot be prevented from obtaining quality legal education because of his age as even Bar Council rules for legal education have also withdrawn the age criteria for legal education in India.
The court observed that a large population in India still lives in rural areas where the average age of passing out senior secondary is 19 years or 20 years and thus those students are left with no opportunity to seek admission into the NLU’s.
RMLNLU Lucknow which is organizing CLAT 2015 will file its reply by March 12.
