The National Seminar on Women Empowerment- A Strategy for Development is being organised by Institute for Social and Economic Change (ISEC) in collaboration with the Indian Council of Social Science Research (ICSSR), New Delhi.

Background of the Seminar
In recent years, there has been a growing realisation that development goals cannot be achieved unless gender inequalities are removed and women are empowered to choose and decide their own welfare, the welfare of their families and the communities in which they live.
Women empowerment depends on her education levels, work participation and exposure to mass media. Investment in women’s education results in improved status through improved economic prospects, greater decision-making autonomy, control over resources, exposure to the modern world, husband-wife communication, self reliance in old age and reduced restrictions on physical mobility.
In this context the proposed seminar theme “Women Empowerment- A Strategy for Development” will be focusing on how women’s empowerment can help improve overall development process in India with a view to evolve suitable policy prescriptions.
Themes and Sub-Themes
The sub-themes of the Seminar are:
1. Women’s education and involvement in household decisions and development
2. Women’s work and empowerment in the household and development
3. Freedom of movement and development, and empowerment/
4. Women empowerment and domestic violence
5. Women empowerment and development
Objectives of the seminar
The main focus of the seminar is:
a. to examine the women’s participation in household decision-making and freedom of movement;
b. to address the issue of women’s education and work.
c. to highlight the inter linkages between women’s control over spousal earnings and violence against women.
d. to suggest remedial measures to improve women’s status.
Call for Papers
Researchers, academicians, programme managers and those working in the area of women and gender development are invited to contribute research papers. The paper must be based on empirical research, theoretical perspectives, methodological innovations, micro-level experiments, policies and programs relevant to the seminar themes.
Those intending to contribute papers to the seminar should submit an abstract of 500 words (approx) in MSWord format to the seminar coordinator by email to mutharayappa@isec.ac.in or chanamma@isec.ac.in. The seminar committee will review all the received abstracts and select the papers for presentations.
Travel
The paper presenters will get reimbursement of travel to and fro three-tier AC class train fare by the shortest route on production of tickets, and local hospitality during the seminar. The travel reimbursement will be confirmed only on receipt of the full paper.
